UCSD SFP Updates!

The Sustainable Food Project at UCSD sees the forthcoming school year as a year to remember! One with a new farm, many everlasting events, and incredible educational experiences.

A sub-committee has been formed in charge of grant research, writing, and submissions so that the farm may start at the beginning of the school year. A meeting for the Urban Farm Grant Writing Team will be held this coming Tuesday the 25th at 2 pm (location TBA). Feel free to come with any thoughts on fundraising for the Farm!

We are also currently working with the Student Sustainability Collective to create a welcome week environment soaked in environmentally conscious activities. The SSC is an open space that is dedicated to serving the university community in the area of sustainability by providing resources, support, and space to foster an active culture of responsibility for sustainability on campus and in the community. We look to SSC as a great centerpiece for connecting the causes for sustainablity and broadening the on campus effort with the recruiting of new faces.

"The Power of Community How Cuba Survived Peak Oil"

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the
hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this
difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call “The Special Period.” The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

Includes a discussion about the local food movement in our area and ways
you can help support the return to locally grown, fresh and healthy food.

Movie Series

We are also pleased to announce a forthcoming film series centered around gaining a better understanding of the agricultural industry. The first movie will be during either 9th or 10th week, as a means of relaxation from the stressful end of the quarter and a way to find inspiration for the summer of food ahead!

The Urban Farm: Approved!

We are very excited to announce the news that the site for our farm as well as the budget have been approved by the UCSD administration. Now all that is left is gathering together the money to fill the budget, which was kick started by a donation from Muir College.

The vision of the UCSD URBAN FARM is to establish a vibrant experiential learning center on the UCSD campus that encourages and educates sustainable living through the growing of food. The concept of an “urban farm” provides a great resource for this multi-disciplinary approach. On 8,000 square feet in Pepper Canyon, we will be able to grow a variety of seasonal crops allowing the UCSD community to learn how to grow food in urban and suburban landscapes.

We can not wait to break ground and have begun discussions on that regard. We hope to begin the dirty work by the end of the quarter, and see the Urban Farm by the start of Fall.

Tierra Miguel Farm Trip May 9!

For those that have joined us on past trips and for those who haven't, our trips are a full-day of learning, growing, and eating. We will meet at 9am on-campus and head to the farm. We'll get a tour of their farm, demonstrations, discussions/lectures about organic farming, and some quality hands-on experience. The best way to know where your food comes from is to dig in!
